Members shared thoughtful strategies for supporting a 26-year-old autistic stepson with hygiene and weight management, emphasizing gentle, collaborative approaches like exercising together, cooking together, or finding shared activities that naturally incorporate movement. Several members described tools and routines that have worked for their own adult children, including activity boards with daily checkboxes for small goals like drinking water or exercising for short intervals, swimming classes, martial arts, and YMCA programs, with one member celebrating their son's 23-pound weight loss over five years through consistent small habits. A recurring theme was meeting individuals where they are without shame, celebrating slow progress, modeling healthy behaviors, and recognizing that independent living, structure, and community activities often spark positive change naturally over time.

Maybe you and your stepson could do something together that is either w/ movement or cooking ? Almost like having some time together and doing something beneficial.

To be honest it would do us both good! He's very high functioning and computer gaming is like his religion. My wife and I just got him into his own place which is in a very walkable neighborhood not far from us. Hopefully this summer we can get him out and about town. He's even considering finding a job that is local =)

My son is a picky eater and like someone stated above , it’s important that they eat even if it’s not the fruits and veggies. I have an activity board and my son checks off what he does so for him we put drink a bottle of water, eat a banana and mixed in between these is to get On the exercise bike 5 minutes at a time which total 20 for the day. He does it everyday faithfully but he also has had an activity board since he was 5 and he is now 30 so he is used to using this. We also started a year ago going to a swimming exercise glass once a week together . Over the last 5 years he has lost 23 pounds total - slow going but he’s happy active and motivated.

My son goes to the YMCA twice a week with his teacher and classmates. He enjoys it. My husband and I exercise regularly so he has learned by watching us. 😊
