I personally do not like medicine, probably because Ive seen people become addicted. A friend of mine said you have to make the choice for your som because he cannot for himself. I know how focus and regulate life with or without medication but I do have a choice.
Honestly, trial and error. Everyone's body handles medications differently. Talk with your child's pediatrician.

My 17 year old takes 15mg Methylphenidate on School days in the morning. She has tried all the stimulants and this helps her focus the most with very little side effects.
I've been taking Adderall since 2008. It's a game-changer. Granted, I was 25 when diagnosed, so I was the one who made the decision to inquire about it and then take it once prescribed, but it's been beneficial to me! :)
There are things beyond RX (Prescribed Medications) that can help, like;
1. Lavender: The smell can help calm down the ASD Mind.
2. Allergy (OTC) meds: Removes Anxiousness/Calms down the nervous ASD.
3. Scalpacin: Alleviates the scalp (Not only for itches).
4. Jock-Itch/Athlete's Foot Spray: Alleviates itches (Distractions) from daily life.
5. ACNE Wipes: Reduces Sweat/Dirt from getting into the eyes.
