my son (6) has only been diagnosed with ASperger's and ADHD, but I suspect he has some other things as well, but he can NOT handle playing any kind of electronic game because he gets very very frustrated (throws things, hits the tv, walks by and swipes things off tables, cusses, etc) so I am trying to find something that he could watch calmly that he would like. We have Netflix and Amazon so tons to choose from, just need help chosing :)
We watch animal movies and documentaries. My son also likes car and truck movies like Mighty Machines. I have very careful with how much screen time he gets. His negative behaviors are worse after… read more
Hello Everyone! I am new to this group - my 5 year old son was officially diagnosed as High Functioning Autistic a couple of weeks ago. He has been getting OT and Speech Therapy through the school district for almost a year now, so thankfully my fight to get him more services won't be as arduous as if I was starting from the very beginning. As I'm sure you all know, the road will be a bumpy one for sure, but I've got my binder nicely organized and I'm gathering all my paperwork so we'll be… read more

My 6 year old (1st grade)son (diagnosed with autism/ADHD) is having trouble with reading. Last year he was in excelled reading and this year his teachers are saying that is is doing great with reading however when he reads to my husband and I we can't understand what he is reading unless we are following along(which he doesn't like us doing, wants to read it himself) he leaves words out changes words and pauses at the end of each line not when there is a period. He also doesn't know how to use… read more
I also find that the school exaggerates my son's acheivements and underplays his difficulties. Even with lawyers involved, they insist there is nothing wrong because he is on track. The detailed… read more

I am a single mom to a 5 year old boy with Autism. He just recently became totally potty trained but he still requires assistance when using the restroom. However, he exceeds the age maximum to allow him in most female public restrooms and locker rooms and looks like he is a typical 7 or 8 years old due to his size. Just when I thought I would be relieved when he became potty trained, now I have anxiety around his needing to use a public restroom because I cannot assist him. Have any other… read more
My answer to this is to find the UNISEX bathrooms when your out -(FAMILY BATHROOM) where the doors lock and try and get her used to that.
I know this sound a bit unusual, but there has been so much talk about this very subject. In my opinion, it does not make a difference if you do not have a lot of money. I do believe that although people have not always spoken of autism, make no mistake that there have been children with the disorder and for those that did not possess great amounts of money, they still found a way to make it through. Having said that, there are those that say that resources and information is not provided to the… read more

My husband and I had a "five year plan" for having our second child when our son was first born. Because his challenges had become more apparent, my husband started to think that maybe it would be too much to have a second one. Now that our guy has been diagnosed with ASD, I'm worried my husband will not want to have a second child at all.
I think once he starts preschool, that will be a big break for us and maybe then we can open up the discussion for #2 again. This question is mostly for… read more

AUTISM SPEAKS...nothing but a big joke. Definitely BAD. They have done NOTHING for us. All they are good at, is asking for donations.
Who's diagnosis do you go with when all of your own research points to ASD and the psychiatrist says ASD and depression but the highly regarded children's hospital says ADHD and anxiety? This presents a problem between my husband and others in the family who aren't accepting of the ASD diagnosis.
i feel adhd and anxiety are parts of asd
tell the family that the sooner they accept and learn about it the more helpful they will be with child
the children have to be protected
