I Have 1 Son With Autism, In Your Own Experience What Are The Chances Of Having A Second Child On The Spectrum?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question đź’
A MyAutismTeam Member

If it was definitely genetic they would have revealed it by now as they are always saying they “don’t know” the cause. I find that hard to believe. Also, if was something genetic or a DNA abnormality… read more

Are The Autistic Behaviors I Am Seeing At This Age Of 3.5 Increase Over Time Or Diminish? Peak At A Certain Age? Will The OCD Worsen?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question đź’

I am curious if the autistic behaviors I am seeing at this age of 3.5 are indicitive of future behaviors...did your child's symptoms progress over time? For instance, just because my son appears to suffer mild OCD and stimming right now, can/will these behaviors develop and worsen as he gets older? It it common for them to escalate as he gets older? Or peak at a certain age? Hopefully diminish? Please let me know your experience.

My son has been stimming for almost a year. It started just during care rides, but now does it several times during the day. The neurologist says that it's a response to being under and… read more

How Do You Tell A 6 Yr Old About Autism Who Has Been Newly Diagnosed?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question đź’

Our son was just diagnosed with ASD a few weeks ago. He's 6 yrs old and high functioning. He has no awareness that he is different from his peers, i.e. he thinks he has friends and says that he talks at school even though his teacher says otherwise. My husband and I have been procrastinating about talking to him about the diagnosis, as we are still in the midst of trying to figure out what it means for our son and for our family. Does anyone have any recommendations or thoughts about how best to… read more

Six years old is very young. I just waited 'til she was ready...wait for the cues. You'll know them. My daughter started asking questions when she was around 12. I had done a commercial for a… read more

Potty Training
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question đź’

My daughter who has ASD is 2 and A half, she is a very big 2 and a half year old. Not really fat just tall and solid but none the less out growing a size six diaper (they are barely strapping) so I guess I have several questions here..... how old were some of your children on the spectrum when they potty trained? What were some of their challenges and things you found that worked well for them? And if potty training isn’t an option has anyone had to order diapers bigger than a 6 and where is the… read more

Our son was potty trained during the day, but not at night. He had accidents. He was wearing pull-ups overnight until he was 12 before he no longer needed them. They are all different. It is very… read more

Does Anyone Else Feel They're Not As Patient As They Admit To Be???
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question đź’

Shoot me now, I've lost it and then some and kick myself every time I read some mother or father express just how fabulously patient they've become since discovering their child's diagnosis. When will I find myself as patient as these parents claim to be?
Please tell me I'm not alone here.

Has Anyone's Adolescent Child With High Functioning Autism Become Extremely Aggressive?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question đź’

My son is now 16 and for the past four years has become increasingly more aggressive. He has been hospitalized short term four times now, has been on three of the atypical antipsychotics and one first generation antipsychotic with worse rage behavior occurring when on those drugs. He has been on Depakote and was on Concerta for a long period, about seven years. At this time we are working with intensive in home therapists, but he is not cooperating and is at risk for placement in a Level III… read more

This is heartbreaking for me to read & write a reply to. My brother had the same problems before he was emergency placed. My mother and I were pretty much in seclusion except for school and home (my… read more

How Many Parents Have Their Child On A Holistic Protocal (chelation, Supplementation, Etc)? How Much Progress Has Your Child Made?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question đź’

I'm concerned since I've moved to Texas at the high number of holistic doctors here that have jumped on the Kreb Cycle (digestive cylcle)DNA, chelated therapy for removal of "heavy metals", and high supplementation bandwagon! Parents need to know that some of these "doctors" are claiming to be certified specialist when they are not. ALL of these protocals have never been approved (and have been discounted by the American Pediatrics Association) or studied by a medical campus that isn't a… read more

Looks
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question đź’

So i was wondering if anyone has been told the same as me. When people fnd out your son or daughter is autistic they say. Oh but they look normal. Is there a certain look they have to look?.

I get the same thing. It's infuriating to me.

Do You Let Your Child Know They Have Autism?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question đź’

My son is 3 and I struggle with the idea of him some day realizing he's different. Do you raise your young children with ASD knowing that they have autism, or do you wait to tell them when they're older? Is it something you discuss in front of them or when they're not around?

A MyAutismTeam Member

We have always been up front about it autism and talk about it with him. He is in a gen-ed classroom so many of his quirks shine through..and it helped him and his friends to understand his needs. We… read more
