I'm not sure how to ask this without sounding incredibly selfish, but here goes. On our way home from Boston I asked my husband if we could stop to window shop at a mall. His response, "To look at things we can't afford? No way, I'm tired and want to eat." After I started thinking,I got angry. In the six years we have been together, everything we do, every place we go is for him or the kids. Not once in five years have we done something just because I wanted to.I can't even get my haircut unless… read more

I was wondering how many moms here work? I asked this on another site but I'm new here and its always nice to get different insight. I want to work but her sleep schedule and other factors are making it hard. So, I am wondering if you work outside of the home, how does it affect your child's services and if you work from home, what do you do? How early did you start working? Is your child in a daycare or other place for autistic kids? Any advice or insight? I can not seem to find any place that… read more
Check with the local schools -- many of them use aides for lunch, drop off and pick up. Aids are also used to help some of the special needs kids when they are mainstreamed.
I have a 5 year old son with Asperger's. At the beginning of school I was called in for a 504. I asked them how we get more accommedations for him (one on one) that I knew he would have to have. They told me he would have to be tested. However, they would have to observe for 60 days in order to even start the testing process. As time has gone on his teacher said he needs one on one and I asked how we do that. She stated he must be tested. At that time he was failing but a week later he… read more

My son does not understand when or how to be quiet. I understand that this is a normal problem for most children however my son likes to be overly loud during times when I ask him to be quiet. He seems to think its funny and his teacher is getting upset with him during the morning moment of silence. Does anyone have a more affective method of getting him to be quiet? Im sure lots of you have or had this problem yourselves.
This is really loaded. There are many ways to encourage a child who doesn't understand the need to moderate their voice in different situations. I have seen and used verbal, visual, and physical cues… read more

My 3 year old non-verbal daughter is absolutely terrified of fans. We seem to think it's the "sound" that bothers her. School is trying to help her with this. As the warm weather approaches they use fans in the classroom and she needs to get used to it. Also, static on the TV terrifies her and also certain sounds from her toys that she used to like before now totally freak her out. Any one else have this issue with their little one?
My son used to be extremely sensitive to sound - even the ticking of car turning indicator would cause him to put his hand over his ears. He could not tolerate his own voice and therefore used to… read more

I have a 7th grade boy who is High function but would need a 1 on 1 person to supervise him on out of town school trips. chaperoning myself is not an option because small town politics "the favorites" always go. He missed a 3 day trip to Atlanta last year. Next year is a week long trip to D.C. and I really want him to go. Can I insist they provide 1 on 1 supervision? I know they would not be able to exclude him if he had a physical disability so why can they do it to an autistic child?
if your child has a 1:1 during his school day, you can talk to his case manager about attending the class trip. If he does not have a 1:1, you can ask his case manager if they can get one for the… read more
Just curious how ABA therapy works in states requiring insurers to cover it. I work for the Feds and the federal health plan didn't cover ABA for years. OPM now "encouraged" to offer it, but they're not mandated. I've read plenty from my fellow federal employees with autistic children, and the handful of plans covering ABA are a joke. For anyone in MAT land receiving ABA through your medical plan, how is it working? Also , Autism Speaks should have a list of states mandating ABA coverage.
@A MyAutismTeam Member that's great. Your employer rocks for covering ABA :)
I have recently begun interviewing for a new job. I was speaking to one of my references yesterday who told me that he got a reference call on me and he made a comment to the potential employer that he thought I would be a good fit since I have a son with autism. I was very taken back that he chose to disclose that information about me. I am certain he meant no malice, and probably felt he was helping me... but what he said the employer said to him puzzled me. She said "another one of her… read more
