swallowing medicine and spitting out toothpaste

I am a child care provider for a wonderfully sweet 4 year old autistic boy. His mom has come to me asking how she can get her son to swallow medicine (he will hold it in his mouth for over 45 minutes without ever swallowing) and today we are trying to get him to spit out his toothpaste (not something we want to have him swallow)

Any ideas we can try here at the center or that I can pass along to help out his mom?

You don't have to use toothpaste, actually it is probably better not to. Fluoride is actually a neurotoxin. There are many other things in toothpaste… read more

What are some candies/toothpastes that help reduce spitting/saliva production?

Wondering what candies, toothpaste, gum...help a child who spits a lot. My son is experiencing "juicy mouth" so I am looking for a candy/toothpaste to tackle too much saliva. Any suggestions?

Abilify medicine

Recently our pediatrician recommended abilify for our sons transitions and focus issues. Has anyone tried this and if so did it help? We're a little concerned about putting our young son on strong meds like this, assuming he will even swallow the pill (hes not fooled by crushing and hiding in other foods/drinks either)

Does anyone else have issues with an 11 yr old asd non verbal holding saliva in mouth?

My cute son will hold his spit in his mouth until he throws up or is told to spit somewhere. He will hold it on the school bus, in the car up to 80 miles without swallowing. This is all new behavior for us. Any tips or advice is appreciated.

Holding saliva in mouth for extensive periods of time

Hi. I'm an AU teacher with a student who has a new habit (past 2 weeks) of holding his saliva in his mouth. He hovers over the garbage when we bring him to the garbage. I have tried to use reward items and activities he typically loves but he does not budge when it comes to this. I have read that this can affect children's teeth and after the child coughed last week, it went all over everything and everyone. I have contacted home but his guardian is lost and… read more

Medicines

My daughter ia on celexa 30 mg. It doesn't seam to make much difference and then 2 months ago they put her on Serequel 25 mg. And in 8 weeks she gained 25 pounds. We went from a 7/8 to a 12/14 I bought new clothes of course but she was crying all the time because she wanted her old clothes back. So we weened her off as off last week she is off and she's already lost 5 lbs but she is a melt down mess again. Does anyone… read more
