In finding out more about my son's autism & selective mutism, I found out I myself have the same high-functioning autism & selective mutism. Are there any other parents that have ASD also?
I took a free online test and couldn't believe how high I scored, so I took one from another site with the same result. So I went to my psychologist and he spent 3 sessions going over the DSM5 asking… read more
Wondering if anyone may have some tips for toilet training a 10 year old or success stories later in age. He goes sometimes if you can just happen to catch him at the right moment, or if he is naked. If he has any underwear or pull-up on he doesn't know to run to the bathroom. He gets easy stressed if we try to make him go to the bathroom, he feels easily pressured about it, so we can't just take him every 30 minutes or hour because he gets stressed then it turns into a negative experience and… read more
Wandaj wishing you the best! It is hard I'm afraid the older he gets the less likely it will happen, but he seems to understand it a a lot better now that he is older but we have a long way to go!
I'm thinking about getting a small trampoline with a bar for my daughter. We would keep it in the living room area. For those with a similar set up. Do you supervise every second the child is on the trampolin. I'm scared that they will fall if I'm not directly supervising. I spend all day with them, but occasionally will go upstairs to put in a load of laundry or do stuff in the kitchen while they play in the living room. I have 2.5 year old twins.
I am a liscensed cosmetologist but have yet to actually start working because the cost of childcare is insane. None of my family (or husbands) can handle both of my kids for long periods of time so I am a stay at home mom. We really could uses more income. So I am planning to join scentsy to do something from home. I'm just curious how many people are able to work and afford care for our kiddos, seems impossible to me.

Hi. Soon moving from South Africa to the States. My husband has a job transfer to NYC. I have a 12 year old son on the spectrum. I've been scouring the net for a place to put down roots and from what I see, I like the thought of staying in New Jersey. I see a lot of awareness, facilities and providers in this State. I don't know a soul in the States so its a scary transition for me. l'd love advice, you thoughts, info regarding school and also perhaps get to know a few friendly faces… read more

I currently live in CT and the services are ...OK... I guess. Can anyone tell me what I should expect out in Wisconsin? We're looking to move by this time next year as we just cannot make ends meet here. We would be moving 45 min north of Madison....
I am wondering if anyone has opinions about Colorado/New Mexico/Arizona areas and the amount of support young adults on the spectrum receive. I have a 15 year old son, and we are looking at relocating to the southwest, and would like to find a community that would fulfill our families needs. My son is high functioning and very quirky!!
Thank you!!
I appreciate everyone's input! I'm going to be contacting the Autism Society of Colorado and Arizona as well about information. Thank you for the answers everyone!!
Yesterday our case manager at the San Andreas Regional Center and I discussing cost sharing for respite services, and she said that if my daughter qualified for Medi-Cal then SARC would cover 100% of the cost of respite care. She offered to refer her to Medi-Cal, saying that if we applied ourselves we could be denied based on income, but if she referred us, they would look at her application as being for someone with a disability and be more likely to approve it.
I have misgivings about it… read more
My kids have had Medi-Cal based on the Regional Center waiver for many years (like almost 15 in one case.) As long as it's clear that the Medi-Cal is secondary, then there is no problem using our… read more
