What Do You Consider High Functioning?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Just curious as to how everyone here has either been told about or has their own opinion about the label "high functioning ". We are struggling about schools and their definitions of high functioning. Any input would be a great help as our providers all agree the label "high functioning" doesn't exist.

A MyAutismTeam Member

Tell whomever has these opinions to go look in the official DSM 5 . That is where the guildlines for ASD are. The word "high functioning" is subjective to the persons opinion on the subject matter… read more

How To Deal With Dating
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

So I'm a caregiver with a 29 year old who is extremely high functioning. He's very independent but doesn't understand social cues. He's new to our program so everyone is still kind of walking on eggshells. SG'S parents allow him to use Facebook and with that SG likes to add random people. After they are added, SG instantly assumes that they are friends like in real life. He flirts with girls that are dangerously young (17,18) when we try to explain why that's frowned upon, SG becomes agitated… read more

Would You Move Away Or Stand Upon A Soapbox Screaming?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

We live in middle Tennessee, south of Nashville. Our daughter is 4 years old, diagnosed with autism 2 years ago. She's been attending a great preschool and has fabulous therapists. We have been blessed, she has worked very hard and is doing very well. With that being said we have been looking for a private education for her. We have toured schools, made many phone calls, totaling almost 14 different places
We have been flat out told no to the options we thought she had. There is not a school… read more

What Can I Do About An Unsupportive Spouse?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have been married for 7 years. This past year, our son who is 4, has been diagnosed with moderate to severe autism. My husband has been very hands off as far as doctors appointments, getting a diagnosis, and schooling goes. I would not have such a problem with this except that he must not only criticize every decision I make, but he does not take the time to learn about what autism is or what our son needs. His idea of dealing with a melt down is to yell back and make our son sit in a time out… read more

I'm sorry to hear about this. I am going through this myself with my children's dad. We aren't married but we are together. He won't do anything to help with appointments, educating himself about… read more

Rice In A Gluten Free Diet
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Can you have rice in a gluten free diet if rice is not a high sensitivity. We've tried gluten free rice, but my daughter prefers regular rice.

A MyAutismTeam Member

"gluten free" rice is a rip off.

Rice is gluten free.

How Do We Get ABA Therapy
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I am really new to all of this, so any suggestions are welcome. Luca was diagnosed through the school district in April with ASD. His medical eval is in June. Do I have to wait for a medical diagnosis to get ABA?

A MyAutismTeam Member

Go to a Regional Center. You can start there as well just incase your insurance does not cover it or the cost is high. Easter Seals does ABA, but get services asap. Good luck.
