Does Anyone Else Have Issues With An 11 Yr Old Asd Non Verbal Holding Saliva In Mouth?
My cute son will hold his spit in his mouth until he throws up or is told to spit somewhere. He will hold it on the school bus, in the car up to 80 miles without swallowing. This is all new behavior for us. Any tips or advice is appreciated.
my son will sometimes lean over and drool and just watch his spit fall to the floor for no apparent reason and he doesn't swallow during that time and he doesn't respond to me saying his name or asking him to stop and swallow. he does that for about 3-5 minutes at a time. Never as long as what you're experiencing. I did make an appointment with his PCP to get a referral to an ENT because he's congested a lot and I wonder if his throat may be irritated from the nasal cavities dripping back into his throat?
My son does something similar. He somehow regurgitates foam and moves it in and out of his mouth really fast. It's quiet disgusting and disturbing. His mothers side thinks its something he can't control coming from his stomach... But if that is true why is he stimulating it in and out of his mouth continually without discontent? To multiply the problem ten fold he has done this so much to the point where he is rotting away his teeth... As would happen with a bulimic person.... except at a much fast rate because he does this 100's of times a day.... I'm really really worried. :(
My son is driving me crazy with this issue. I do believe this is a form of his OCD. This just started this year and replaced another bad habit. On the bus I have them hand him a bit of cereal forcing him to swallow. In my car I make him drink water. In the house he spits in the trash. I feel if I make too big a deal of it, it may become worse. Just a min ago though he spit on the floor and had also spit into the fish tank! I was not happy about this at all. I told him it was nasty and made him clean it up himself. Hopefully that will be the last time. I think he thought the dog would help him. =( yuk. Another boy at school was doing the same thing and a year later has since stopped. There is hope!

Thank you for the advice! The first thing I thought was dentist.. no cavities. He does really well communicating what hurts. But. I never thought tonsils etc... he does drink a ton, and seems to have a lot of saliva. I will have to watch closer :)
