Hello my daughter Vianni is three years old. About a week ago I notice she's been plugging her ears with her index fingers during loud noises or just at random. Tonight she's been covering them for about an hour now. The noise is pretty normal at my house. Can anyone explain more to me about sensory overload and her hearing. I am pretty new at all this. I know it can be normal in a child with autism. Is there anything I can do to help her? It breaks my heart not to be able to do anything for⦠read more
When my daughter was young we couldn't figure out what noises were bothering her. She wouldn't wear the noise canceling headphones or anything else on her head. We began video taping her and seeing if we could pick up on the noises she reacted to. It worked wonders. We found that normal household noises that we just ignore were really bothering our daughter ie. furnace kicking on, trucks driving by, dryer running ect. We later realized that she could hear thing the rest of us couldn't. She would cry and say it's thundering when it wasn't but then 15-30 minutes later a thunderstorm would roll in. Be very observant to the noises around you
I had to buy my daughter noise reduction headphones so she wouldn't plug her ears all the time. they were getting red from her sticking her fingers in them too far. She resisted at first but after being consistent about it, she allows them on for longer periods of time. Also, she not only plugs her ears because of noise but also when she is overly excited or upset. If you know it is from the noise and not an emotion, then that is an auditory defensiveness. http://pediatricot.blogspot.com/2011/02/helping...
My son does this. My son has high auditory sensory too. Removing them to a quiet place works, but sometimes, asking them what they would like to hear is another option. Sometimes, he is trying to tune out one noise so that he can hear another. Also, one thing you should know is that there is a pressure point behind the ear that my son presses on to assist in relaxing himself. Hope this helps!
My daughter cried a day or two after she was born when she heard the bathroom door in the hospital click shut. She is bothered by the presence of smoke alarms because our battery-powered alarms can sometimes go off if someone turns on the lights in a room- weird because they aren't together. She also cries if I cough which is something I couldn't even find on Google.
If she is making the noise, it's no problem to her. busy places like Walmart don't bother her because she is looking at everything so she isn't thinking about the noise.
