I wanted to add that even celebrities like Dan Aykroyd (whose interest in ghosts and police led to helping to write Ghostbusters and Coneheads), and Daryl Hannah (Splash, Blade Runner, Steel… read more
My 7 yr old son started doing this at home first. Usually laying on his stomach and his legs go straight out when he lays on his hand. Usually does this while watching a video on his tablet. He gets sweaty after doing this for awhile. It does not seem sexual in nature so that's why I think it's a form of stimming.
Well I got the call today that he has started doing this at school. Has any one else dealt with this? Do kids on the spectrum hit sexuality and puberty milestones early?
How would this work if son is not verbal mine is but moderate not able to have a back and fourth conversation his 8 and has started doing this a lot
I need advice on how to avoid the power struggle with my 16 yr. old. I have tried all I can think of and need to know what has worked for others with teens. My stress level is out of control and my bp is too high, please help!
It's always harder for the parents, as your a safe target for aggression. I've learned working with adults that each and every one of our kiddos are master manipulators in their own way, and they've… read more
We recently brought our 4 yr old granddaughter to live with us " We have noticed a pattern as far as telling her "we don't do that, no,take something away from her that might hurt her, we bought her a tiny tykes trampoline to help keep her from jumping on he beds. She throws a temper tantrum/meltdown. I usually just let her work through them.(we believe they used to lock her in her room). We will not do that. Eventually she stops any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm no sure if they are… read more
the aggression is something you will have to both ignore and block. If she goes to bite you and hit you try to move away. the spitting is something you'll have to ignore. Don't react to any of the… read more
I am a psychologist in Santiago, Chile. The family has been given this resource to address extreme tantrums and frustration tolerance issues. The center seems very expensive. Their own testimonials give positive reviews. I an wondering whether anyone has gone through their behavioral training for individuals and families and what your experience was like?
I agree that what happens before the behavior and how it is handled play a part in maintaining the behaviors.
My adorable, handsome 15-year-old is verbal and fairly high-functioning. He's 5'4", 120 lbs. and has been showing a normal interest in girls for about the last year. He understands that it is not appropriate to violate personal space or touch someone without their permission, but has to be reminded occasionally. Recently we have been working on teaching him that it is normal to want to look at girls' bodies, but it is not okay to stare at them, try to look at their breasts, etc.. So far, things… read more
Since social stories are two "simple" for him, I would just have a series of conversations about appropriate and inappropriate behavior with girls, yourself, etc. However, I would do it as a series… read more
Does it make sense to mix ABA with ST and OT, instead of just doing ABA
My 21 month old son was just diagnosed as being on the spectrum last week. He had already been scheduled to receive speech therapy, occupational therapy, and special instruction due to his language delays and sensory issues. Now that he has an autism diagnosis I'm being told he should get 4 hours of ABA a day; 2 at a center and 2 at home, and that will replace all the other therapies. I still don't even fully believe… read more
My grandson is getting in trouble at school because he’s pushing or biting other kids. We’ve had many conversations, but he always gets easily frustrated and reacts this way. How do we help him?
Im so sorry to hear this. You must feel stressed about it. I agree with what’s been said. The behaviours are showing overwhelm or distress. This means staff need to be proactive. Sometimes those… read more
My daughter is about to turn 7 (she was diagnosed when she was 2 with moderate autism) and is becoming more aggressive when she doesn't get her way or is told "no" and she's recently started to cause self injury, I'm not really wanting to have to put her on medication for this but I have been reading about "Risperdal" what are your thoughts on this and has anyone used this to help their child with autism to help with their aggression, self injury or temper tantrums?
