I'm looking for guidance and advice, hopefully from parents who've been in similar situations. My son is 5 1/2 and delayed in most areas in education. He's a fast learner, but getting his focus for long periods of time is hard. He was diagnosed with ASD a few months ago, and has not been in a preschool during/after his diagnosis. He was slated to start kindergarten this fall, however I'm REALLY struggling with that decision. The school district advised I keep him in a special day preschool… read more
We started our Aspie in kindergarten when he was 6. He is now 14 and thriving in 8th grade. I am soooo glad we waited. That extra year of readiness was huge for him and has continued to benefit him… read more
Hi I'm new on here :)
I have a 2 1/2 year old son that we know is on the spectrum ( he gets diagnosed in October), when and how should I go about potty training him?
@A MyAutismTeam Member thanks!!
Hello - my son with ASD just entered 4th grade unable to read or write. He has been attending public school/ special day class since pre-k. I had no idea because the class work they have been sending home was all done with assistance and when he gets home he does not talk about anything. He just goes into his own world to decompress. Covid blew the lid off of everything! I was sitting with him on these zoom classes and it became clear he has never been able to participate and was immensely… read more
So if he has dyslexia, is he getting special reading instruction like Orton-Gillingham?
What professional (pediatrician, psychiatrist, psychologist, etc)can formally assess the readiness of a 13 y.o. highly functional PDD child to be left home alone and the length of time? I am conflicted over my family member's decision to do so and would like to find resources to a formal evaluation to assure this child's safety.
I don't really know either, but I think you might want 2 address the question 1st from a "legal" standpoint? Like, technically, how old should they be—according 2 ur state/town's laws? THEN...

My daughter is 6 and in first grade. She does not read or write. I believe she is dyslexic. She does pretty well in math but is very resistant to doing any school work. She wants someone to do it for her. She struggles with writing. I worry that she wont do the work for me at home but after yesterdays incident i worry the school cannot keep her safe and may cause her more trauma in the long run…
I agree with all of the above. I, too, would try any of the tech apps that will either type what your child is wanting write by speaking to it and/or an app that will read aloud what your child is not… read more

You are welcome
I have decided to pull my son out of The Ohio Virtual Academy (online schooling) and put him in public school for 2nd grade. I am having second thoughts and I am driving myself crazy. There are no schools for autism locally, so this was my main option. He will be in a self contained classroom.
Does anyone have any opinions or experience with their child going to public school?
TIA
Awesome!! 😊
