Has Anyone Had Success In Getting Their Child Involved In Any Sports / Athletic Activities?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

I was wondering if any parents have had success in integrating their child into a sport or physical activity of any kind?

My middle (autistic) boy has taken up BMX (bicycle moto-cross)racing and has become unbelievably successful at it in less than 2 years. He is even sponsored by a bicycle shop and an apparel company. He is now being "scoped out" by a HUGE bicycle company's factory team. Unreal. I have noticed that there are many kids at the race track and skate parks that are clearly on the… read more

My son is 11 years old and loves doing karate. He started by attending the class only 15 minutes and then gradually stayed until it finish. (1 hour). I feel that karate has helped him with motor skills, getting rid of his energy and his behaviors. He listens and respects the teacher. He has been doing extremely well at school and home since joining. Good luck!

Boys tend to gang up on the weak link. My son will probably be a professional musician. He is so focused on his guitar I can hardly get him away from it. He also swims, and I hired a private karate teacher to help him work on balance, coordination, and help build his self confidence. He has been part of Cub and Boy Scouts for nine years. With the troop he has done some incredible things with them. He also attends a church youth group on his own. He holds his own because he has been free to choose the activities he enjoys. There is always track and field, hiking, golf.

Forget team sports. Our kids spealize in many other activites where they can be successful in their own right. Team sports are over-rated. I have seen parents getting to aggressive at the team games and it scares the jeepers out of aspie kids. Typically, our kids don't think about strategy, they just go for it when they find something they want to do. . .and they usually excel right into adulthood that way.

Ryan loves swimming, and is obsessive about swimming everyday. The coach at Islamorada said he could be competing on a team by next year if I let him.
He also loves foot racing, so much so, he taught the other kids in his Pre-K class how to run races. His teacher says he makes them all line up, and she has to say ready-set-go! She was pretty amazed. I told her it was something I taught all the kids at our last apartment complex so they could win popcicles during the summer. lol So, I see track in his future too.
He is determined to horseback ride and doesn't want a pony; he wants a horse, so were at a stalemate right now until he's a little bigger. He cant take riding lessons until next year, but one of the Mom's on here referred me to an Autistic horse therapy camp near FtWorth were he'll be this summer so I'll try to get him into that one.
All of these sports (swimming, track, equestrian) are on teams, but compete individually so I think he'll succeed at all of them. I dont see him ever being in baseball or football, it is beyond his ability to cope with that many kids doing so many different things at the same time.
