Lately, Jourden has been crying as soon as I pick up the bottle of lotion. I used to lotion him up all the time after baths to avoid his skin from becoming dry and ashy. However, lately he is refusing to put on lotion and dry, ashy skin is not appealing. I tried different brands to see if it was just the particular lotion but he has the same reaction. Could there be a reason for why he is refusing to put on lotion?
Just a thought, he might be having an issue with the light touch your using to rub in the lotion. You could try lying him down and then use deep pressure (more like a muscle massage) to put his lotion on. Start at the top of his body using firm pressure while applying it to his face, then use your hands to squeeze his muscles while you put the lotion on, working your way all the way down to his feet. Even squeeze his feet and toes to finish.
You might be amazed at how much he'll enjoy it, and will be calm for awhile (less bouncing, stimming, and such) for up to 2 hours after. This type of deep pressure message is part of what Ryan's OT therapist calls a "sensory diet" and since I starting using joint compression and body brushing too, he isn't running, bouncing, and spinning as much as before. I hope this helps. (hugs)
Intersting...I've had the same thing recently with my 4yr old too. He does okay with sunscreen application during the day, but doesn't want lotion after his bath anymore. Since dry skin isn't much of an issue for him, I don't worry about the after bath lotion. When I use sunscreen on him, I put a small amount in his hand so he can apply it himself. That seems to distract him long enough for me to quickly apply the rest. Does he use liquid hand soap? Maybe try a cute lotion pump (something shaped like Lightning McQueen or w/e) and let HIM pump it and apply to you. Perhaps it's a sensory thing where the act of someone applying the lotion is annoying. Good luck :)
Could it be the scent? I know I am sensitive to smells and most lotions just smell too strong for me. I do like citrus scents but that could be the problem.
You could try using moisturizing soap to help with dry skin. Dove makes a sensitive skin bar that is very mild.
Try almond oil my kids love it leaves there skin so soft
My son has issues with lotion, chapstick, hair products, etc. He hates all of them! He says they are greasy or slimy and can't stand them on his skin or hair. I haven't been able to come up with a solution; I just know that my son's issue with all this is sensory (for the most part, anyway).
