My youngest son is 16 and is getting ready to be old enough to go out into this big mean back stabbing selfish world. Letting him go is one of the scariest things im facing. What will he do, how will he handle employers, or others who see weakness and try to take advantage of him. Im just a scared dad who is very proud of his son whom is growing up to be a great young man. Anyone else having the same feelings, or have any suggestions ?
Are you planning on college? I work at CSUEB and they seem to have a great program for students with ASD. Lots of support and a great environment for them.
Also, as with any kids, you should always make it clear they can talk to you about anything and you will be there to listen to them and help as needed. That is all you can do.
yes, one day at the time, that's how they live anyway for the moment! but unfortunately most people don't understand that. frankly the hardest part of it all is not having an autistic son, but having to deal with the world out there who really have no clue!! that's the challenge!
Our pastor says we are all "Works in Progress" & I think that is so true for our kids & for us! There is no right & wrong answers for any. We should start by seeking guidance from our Creator & Trust Him to direct our way! Then we must take a stand for our kids in our local government, state & nation. There are so many wrongs happening, we must become aware! Next, we must fight for our kids, whether in a work program, secondary education, church, entertainment, or in county disabled programs. I think it is time we get strong, as parents & I am so thankful for this blog!
good luck with your plan. I have not found the right support for my son, and at 43 he's in a state facility. any ideas for advocacy?
I also have a 16 year old.......heres our plan.We have a few great community colleges very close to us, the plan is for him to stay at home for 2 years while hje attends one of these. because he has big dreams of an engineering degree, he can then attend the university thats about a 50 minute ride. No dorms,no college life
