My is about to turn 18 in July and wasn't diagnosed with asd until age 16 he was misdiagnosed with adhd at age 5. He also has really bad social anxiety disorder, personality disorder, depressive disorder and ocd. He doesn't attend mainstream high school and goes to a tutor for his eduacation. His social skills are so bad he has little contact with the outside world, especially peers his own age. The only friends he has are adults who are friends of mine. I don't see him getting a job any time soon as he refuses to go out in the public, but in the fall he will be doing his tutoring at the new high school(he'll have his own entrance so he doesn't come in contact with the kids) and he has agreed to help the coach on the baseball team( his area of interest is sports) he's like a encyclopidia of sports knowledge. It gives me a little hope for him. I got him into this program that is suppose to help him adjust to being more independent, Im just waiting for the approval from the county where we live. He has agreed to start this mini support group with another boy his age through the psychologist at the high school, so Im crossing my fingers that all goes well...

I don't yet, but I do know someone who teaches autistic kids in high school. Here, anyways, they keep them in the school system until they're 22, when they graduate, which also includes an employable skill.

Thanks for this great info- I live in NC and have a daughter with Asperger's and ADHD who is about to graduate from high school.

Voc rehab can be a great resource. In our state at least, they can also help pay for training if that is appropriate.
