Members discussed the variability in disabled parking permit eligibility for autism across states, with most emphasizing that success depends on meeting state-specific criteria rather than relying solely on an autism diagnosis. Several members shared practical strategies, including reviewing DMV requirements carefully, working with doctors to document specific safety concerns like elopement or bolting in parking lots, and framing the need under broader categories like neurological disorders or mobility safety issues. A recurring theme was the frustration of facing judgment from strangers who don't recognize invisible disabilities, met with fierce advocacy from the community about the real safety challenges families face daily when navigating public spaces with autistic children.

We are getting one for our kids to, and we are using the neuro disorder because that is what fitts into the cata gory for our state. You just have to go to the RMV web site and look at the qualifications and then see what fits, then take the form to the Dr to sign and fill in. Most doctors do not have an issue with this, and if they do find another one.

I few months ago I saw a mom with an autistic child park in a space and she had a permit to do so, and after here and her child left their car and were walking to the store this older woman had the gall to say something to the woman because she could not see anything wrong with the child, and the stimming meant nothing to her like it would us because we know what it is. The woman was very nice and just said her child was disabled to which the old woman said she does not look like it to me and you should be ashamed of yourself for parking there. I could not let that stand and I said first off you should mind your business, second off it is clear the child is autistic if you even know what that is, and third at least theis woman should still be driving on the road while you should not because you are a road hazzard. The woman with the child just smiled and wispered thank you to me and went in the store with her child.

I have no tollerance for people who cannot keep to themselves and think that they know everything.

I think you have to be descriptive in your application and not rely on just "autism" as the reason. I had my physician list the need for physical safety of small minor children who experience behavior that makes them run away from the car in parking lots, creating a hazard for themselves as well as other drivers in the area. There were a couple of other behaviors that we listed as well and we qualified no problem in California. Someone else told me that in Ohio they had to use "mental retardation-type behaviors and limb and muscle weakness affecting balance, judgement and gait, caused by autism" to get theirs approved.

In KY, we just need to get a doctor to fill out the paperwork, and we have a lifetime parking permit. But I will tell you, it causes problems. I parked in a space once and this man jumped me. I told him that my son had autism, and he let me know that he did not consider that a disability. He should have followed me into the restaurant where my son had a major meltdown trying to order. I wanted so bad to find him and ask him if he wanted to change places with me.

I have one. It depends on if your child meets the criteria and if your doctor will fill it out. For me, my son cannot walk at all on his own because he bolts, so for his safety he HAS to walk with an assistance device which is another person or in his stroller. BUT mine is on a 6 month limit at which time we'll reevaluate if he still needs it or not.

I don't think Ohio does. They see autism as a gray area. I had asked about having to stay home with my son since he absolutely doesn't like my mom babysitting. They said that wasn't possible unless he had another underlying medical issue.
