Waivers For Children With Aspergers Syndrome?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Does anybody know about any waivers or grants offered for children with Aspergers syndrome? Something that could be used to pay for a companion or respite care? I know HCBS waivers cover that...but not sure if they do for Aspergers. The child was Medicad and lives in Florida. Thanks!

The general rule right now is that waiver can only be used for MR, which typically lets out kids with Aspergers syndrome. I'm facing that with my daughter right now; she has an IQ of 68 but a diagnosis of Aspergers because she communicates well orally, so it is hard to get help.

The obstacles are far bigger than SSI or Medicaid....if the child has a diagnosis of Asberger's a lot of them are automatically excluded (even tho they are doing away with the Asppergers diagnosis). We're getting ready to apply for waiver yet again, we'll see how it goes this time.

my daughter has aspergers and other disorders. She is 18 and is on the habilitation waiver. I think the biggest obstacle about getting on this waiver is that you need to be on SSI or at least Medicaid.
