Both of my daughters are autistic, one high functioning and one non-verbal. My 13 yr old non verbal daughter started her period this year, and like you I was dreading this moment, not knowing how I was going to explain this to her. If it helps, it went so much smoother than I expected. After accompanying her to the restroom, I began always putting a liner in her panties so that she would get use to this routine. My 19 yr old high functioning daughter always uses pads (her choice), even when not on her period. It does cost a little more every month, but it is more hygienic than her having an accident and is simply part of her routine now. My 13 yr old didn't actually flip out as I anticipated, she just seemed to treat it like any other accident. After seeing me put pads in her underwear a few times, she started doing it herself. She does have me accompany her to the bathroom most of the time anyways to help her, so when I see she has started I make sure an actual pad is used instead of the liner.
