I Would Like To Know How Autistics Respond To Medications Compared With Neurotypicals. I Know I Don't Respond The Same As Others. Do You?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Despite the research that indicates that the neurosynaptic junctions of autistics function differently than those of neurotypicals and that we have sensorimotor differences as well, I am surprised at the paucity of research about pharmacological manifestations of autism. All my life I have experienced very different results from many medications. Now that I have also had spinal cord damage, I don't know for sure which are autism related and which are spinal cord related.

I'm very sensitive to medications, and my son responds differently to them too. For myself, it always surprises doctors about the low doses I take.

Sonrisemom30: Did you use the program? I had the same problem with my son. Tried different meds, nothing worked. My older sister, Terri, now works at the Option Inst. Boy was that a big help!!!

I require very low doses of some meds but extremely high on others.

Yes we are running our Son-Rise program now. I took him out of school because they denied access to that as the appropriate educational model for him. They also said my new disciplinary techniques were not "district approved policy." In other words ABA is district approved policy and all cookies must be cut in that shape or there is a problem with the cookie. I say - no problem with the cookie over here - a problem with the method! Since he is under less stress and having no anxiety being produced during Son-Rise educational training - that too is super beneficial to toning down the hyperactivity and he has his entire cognitive reasoning at his disposal! :)

All I know is that my son was on Ritalin and it was only so that he could tolerate being at school and under great stress constantly with all of the timeouts and aversion therapy they provided. Oh, and they used physical restraint. When I realized how seriously wrong they were with my son, I took him off the ritalin because I noticed that he was sort of high like he no longer had access to his full cognitive functioning. Every child is different and alot of moms swear by the meds. We swear by the GAPS diet alternatively which is more effective and healthy.
