Hi! They evaluated for the IEP and declined us. Then I tried an IEP based on OHI and they declined us. But they did grant him a 504. Fortunately, he is now staring his freshman year at a new school and I'm hopeful that things will be a lot better!!!

I think your son is elegible for a 504 Ask @ his school if they do them. From what I understand its for thoes kids that dont meet the requirements to have an IEP. And it sounds to me like your guy falls right in to this catigory. Best of luck and dont give up eventally they will get sick of you and agree to whatever you are asking for. I should know because thats me, When it comes to my son and his education look out because Im one tough cookie who you dont want to mess with!! God Bless my friend

Thank you, I plan to do my research!! I have been fighting and advocating since he was 2 years old and not about to stop now!! It just gets exhausting after a while but we mamma bears have to keep pluggin' along!!

Unfortunately the school district is right. I read the eligibility requirements for special education and its likely you child does not meet them. I'm giving you the link to Alaska's sped handbook which summarizes the federal IDEA laws (easier than reading the law). http://www.eed.state.ak.us/tls/sped/handbook.html It's under section 8.

That being said..... schools do have obligations to help regular ed students too. I would suggest that you request a class or tutoring on the organization skill-deficent. The counselor should be able to help if they are good at their job.

Thanks!! I did get him a 504 this past spring finally!!! It was interesting that the previous two years, I couldn't get one and then all of a sudden, they give him one. I think you're right -- they got tired of me :)
