Kafitz .. Hi what services are you getting through public school . My son is in kindergarten autism class but I am not very happy with the school . What other help can we get outside school . We are in morrisville NC . Thanks !!

and realizing insurance isnt great...lol my daughter said she should just quit work to get help financially.. :(

Thanks for your responds. Charlene, I hope they will bus him to wherever he needs to go. I was somewhat apprehensive about putting my son in an all-special edu program, but he is getting the attention he needs and doing well. We has lots of time outside of school where he sees friends that are not special needs. Mom's know best and I do believe they are required to provide him services. And thanks for the heads up because if we do come north it likely be in the Western NY/Southern Tier area. And Wendy, we are in Raleigh and my son is in school through Wake County. Things are crazy when first diagnosed but we are slowly figuring things out. In chapel hill, I am guessing you are hooked up with TEACCH. Whatever you do just make sure the provider is a good fit with your child. We switched around our OT a bunch because I felt like they were just doing things by thought were best, but not individualized for my son. Let me know if you have any questions.

I am in NC and as we are newly diagnosed, I have no idea how to find out what programs are good?? Are you near chapel hill?

I am in the middle of transitioning from early intervention to the 3-5 program (NY) Where I am, there is nothing for an autistic child who is my son's age, so I am hoping that at my IEP meeting they will be willing to transport him to the nearest autism program. (I am in Western NY btw) It is true, it is a great program that we have here, but... It's going to be a fight to get him there. The school system has started off to tell me that putting an autistic child in a school specific to autistic children may give my son the impression that, that type of behaviour is normal. I am not autistic. Needless to say, I had left that meeting a little upset. I now am in the process of calling out people who have supported him thus far to get what I want for him.... Battle.
