My son didn't potty train until the week of his 4th birthday. I tried so many times before that but I guess with autistic kids you just have to wait till they're ready because when he was ready he caught on like it was nothing. Took him 2 days to get the hang of it. Don't listen to what everyone else says, they don't know what it's like to have an autistic child. Let him decide when he's ready, he'll know and it will be soooo much easier!!

We didn't potty train until he was ready. He was at age 5. Great chapter on potty training Autistic kids in the book "A work in Progress" by McEachin and Leaf.

My son also was suddenly ready right before his 4th birthday! I do think our kiddos take longer. I'd tell those "well-meaning" people to mind their own business!! hahah

Honestly potty training an autistic child is said to be the most difficult type of child to potty train. With that being said, even starting him on getting used to the potty isn't a bad idea, but you can't really force it too much. I would suggest doing some research on it. Also, this is your child, who is not neurotypical, so you decide! Don't let others push you!

I have my son in an ABA school and they are working with him on potty training and he is going to be 3 this month. We don't push him too hard, just take him to the potty and have 3-5 minute sits and give him a reward (such as playing with a preferred toy) when he goes! Exposure is going to be your best bet to get started.

I reccommend this book to help get some information: http://www.amazon.com/Toilet-Training-Individua...

Good luck!
