Members shared a wide variety of calming strategies for anxious or agitated children with autism, ranging in age from 3 to 21, with sensory activities and music emerging as the most popular approaches across all age groups. Several members described using tactile sensory tools like play-doh, rice bins, dry-brushing, massage, weighted vests, and fidget toys, while many others found success with soothing music such as classical guitar, harp, Enya, Adele, or classic rock played through headphones or MP3 players. A recurring theme was the power of physical comfort and calm communication, including holding children close, speaking in a soothing voice, making eye contact, using firm but loving redirection, and teaching children to self-regulate by taking breaks in a quiet space when needed.

Hand to the shoulder, soothing and calming words with a matter of fact attitude, sometimes when it gets real bad he needs some time out in his room and letting him write about it sometimes helps him.

I sing soothing song at in his ear, and cuddle him in my arms, his five years old. Also when we are in a public place I put a blanket over his face and he feels better. If you can afford an Ipad it helps a lot.
