My 11 yr. old Aspie is getting braces next week. He does not do well with pain at all, even small things, like bumping into a piece of furniture, are huge things for him. I am facing the same thing. And my son's an Aspie as well. I noticed this was 9 mos ago. How did things go?
While we didn't have to deal with braces, my Aspie has always reacted to pain differently. What helped us at the dental office was bringing in paperwork we had printed off about Asperger's and how they can react strongly to painful stimuli. The dentist worked with us by giving him stronger medication to take after procedures.
My son felt a little pain, but didn't want to take pain medicine...the orthodontist should provide some wax to put on the brace to be a buffer...however my son didn't do a good job on brushing and cleaning teeth...and his teeth are so crowded it was very difficult for me to assist him in flossing, so then the orthodontist took them off after we got some issue to where the incoming teeth had a place to come in...If the orthodontist winds up taking the braces off...don't feel like you're the failure...you do what you can do...the rest is not in your control...
