Apraxia
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I am wondering if any other moms or dads are dealing with apraxia as well as asd? We are two years into our journey and ods apraxia has a profound effect on his communication or lack thereof...any stories or experiences are appreciated! Ods has intent to communicate which is what keeps me hopeful he will speak one day. This past summer he finally was consistently saying ma to get my attention...a milestone for both of us!

I'm not sure how old your child is but when my son was younger, we used the DVD "Baby Babble". It really helped with early communication skills. As an accommodation, proloque is a great program. Also My Talk is good. You can get My talk for an ipod too which is much more portable:) (and cheaper)

My son Joey also has been diagnosed autism as well as apraxia of Speech. I was a naive at first and thought it was a matter of learning, practicing making the sounds to create words. It has taken me some time to adjust to the fact that as above response stated, this is motor plannine issue. He has made great progress recently in using a an ipod to speak - he uses proloquo and apple app. He can say what he wants, where he would like to go, toys he wants me to buy him :)
I feel we need to work some experts in the area of apraxia though, and have not yet found them.

My son is diagnosed w ASD and apraxia. We have 2 speech therapists who use PROMPT with him! We also watch the baby babble DVD's. And within 2 weeks of giving DMG supplement he really started trying to say everything! Most of his words are just approximations but he can now communicate and approximate enough to tell us what he wants. We also used a lot of positive reinforcement to get him to produce sounds/words for pictures of things/food we use everyday.

My 10 year old son has autism and apraxia. He was non-verbal and using a SGD to communicate-- intent was there, but verbal communication was only sounds to get attention. He has been working with ST and OT practically his whole life, and though it was helping he still remained non-verbal until 2 years ago (at age 8) he finally started talking! We think he finally became confident enough that what he was saying in therapy was being understood, so he decided to give verbal communication a go! In the past two years he has come so far!

I feel we owe all his progress to speech therapy, but I do have a recommendation. We learned about a product called Nutriiveda through the apraxia community. It is a nutritional shake that was originally developed to support a healthy metabolism, and a mom whose son has apraxia discovered that he was making incredible gains while using it. Well, as more and more families tried these shakes for their apraxic children it seems that there has been a near 100% success rate! Parents (including myself) have seen gains not only in speech production, but in complexity of speech, and even areas not so speech related. I highly recommend learning more about this product at www.pursuitofresearch.org. I have no connection with this company except as a customer, but I do want all families living with apraxia to be aware of Nutriiveda so they can decide for themselves!

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have questions-- I am happy to tell you more!

Have a great day!
Wendy

Thanks Liz72 :) My son is using proloquo - and has recently moved from using it "on command" when asked to - to spontaneouly telling me what he likes, what he wants etc. which has been wonderful. I was getting worried that he saw it as a chore and not a way to communicate. Thanks for sharing!
