How Did Your Child Respond To Prozac?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My 8 year old, who has beend diagnosed with PDD-NOW, is on Prozac for anxiety. She started on the lowest dose a month ago. We noticed no change in her behavior, except that she was more irritable. Last week, we upped the dose. She seems even more irritable and today screamed, I'm going to kill myself. I'm not sure that it was a serious threat and maybe just was the worst thing she could think of to scream to show her displeasure. I'm wondering if other children on Prozac have become… read more

To be more specific on his response to Prozac, within 2 weeks or so we could see him doing activities he used to enjoy but had gotten frustrated at and stopped doing, like drawing or creative writing. He also started singing/humming in his room again when he played... we hadn't heard him sing in so long. :) That was on just 5 mg. We increased to 10 mg recently and have seen him more receptive to doing things, cooperation, and being generally less dark/angry/frustrated. We did not see any of the negative effects you have mentioned.

My 12 yo son has no ill effects on Prozac, and it has helped his mood a LOT. However my husband had horrible panic attacks on it. What we have learned from his new doctor is, if there is existing anxiety, antidepressants can REALLY exacerbate that in the beginning. It is actually common to prescribe an anti-anxiety along with the antidepressant just to control this (for adults at least), for the first weeks until it is past.

I think if you are seeing this type of effect, talk to your prescribing doctor/psychiatrist!!! 1) They may prescribe a secondary med to help your daughter through this until she acclimates 2) They may decide that this med just isn't right and something else would be better! EVERYBODY responds differently, and there doesn't seem to be much practical way to tell who will react well to what drug.

I've recently posted this same info, so sorry for repeating :) Prozac worked well for my son but we ended up in the ER when my husband took it (crippling panic attacks). Ativan as a sedative worked well for my husband, but when my son took it HE ended up in the ER (severe hallucinations). If Prozac is not working for your daughter, something else may.

Good luck, medicating my son was one of the hardest decisions we've made, but for us it has worked.

My daughter had a very similar experience with Prozac, I was very worried and stopped. We are still work on the right meds but Prozac is definitely not it

It usually takes weeks for the body to get used to it. It helped me realize I had depression for most of my life. However for kids suicidal thoughts can increase and you should contact his doctor.

I have long fought all doctors who prescribed any kind of medication to my daughter... since she was 3yo, I had doctors trying to prescribe something to her. I just kept changing doctors. Every single behavior issue and or symptom that they tried to remedy with a prescription was treated with behavioral therapy and a balanced diet free of processed foods. By all means, this is not a suggestion, this is just a testimony of my choice. I feel like medications are a hit and miss, but mostly a huge miss in the treatment of Autism and its symptoms. But again, I'm not a doctor, I'm just a mom who was lucky enough to not be wrong for disagreeing with them.
