My seven year old autistic son, who has always been on or under the 50% on weight, suddenly began gaining a lot of weight. What is even more concerning is that he looks "swollen" on his face, hands, ankles, feet, etc. His bely is also very distended. He has acquired fat in locations not typical of a male patterns, such as his buttocks and thighs. He is also developing a lot of cellulitis on those areas. Anyone on this site is having a similar experience with their son? Please, let me know.
I would see a pediatrician right away, and then possibly request a referral to an endocrine specialist.
that's what I am planning to do, but it helps to go in with some ideas in order to ask the right questions. Unfortunately, many docs are quick to dismiss our concerns
my son has been on melatonin since he was 4 and i've never heard of this side effect.
My son done that. He is 16 as of yesterday. His pediatrician said it is a growth spurt.He is 16 and wears a 36 in mens jeans and a 12 in shoe.
It could be a kidney problem, causing swelling. Definitely get him to the doctor quickly.
