So we have been having a problem with Addison and constipation for about the last year (since she weened at 2 ½ years old.) Her Pediatricians only instruction has been for us to give her 1 to 2 adult doses of Miralax per day. Problem is this creates a situation of extremes for Addison being either constipated or having diarrhea. Over the last month she went 20 days with only 2 small bowel movements, she was in a lot of pain and her Pediatrician recommended we take her to the emergency room. We did just this last Friday, she was admitted and over the next day they used a feeding tube inserted through her nose to deliver the cleaning solution and she was cleared out. Of course you can imagine how traumatic this was for a 3 year old with major sensory problems; none of it was ok at all. She was discharged on Saturday with instructions to give her 1 adult dose of Miralax per day and if she doesn’t have a bowel movement on that day to give her 2 adult doses until she has at least 1 bowel movement per day. On Sunday she had her bowel movement and that was it, same as before we are giving 2 adult doses per day and she still isn’t going. Seen her Pediatrician today and was told we need to start giving her suppositories in addition to the Miralax. We tried to explain to her that Addison would fight those until she hurt herself and the Pediatrician told us she had no further suggestions on what we can do. Only bright spot is they are referring her to an Autism GI Specialist. Would love to know if anyone has gone through this as well and if there are any other suggestions on what we can try. We are doing 2 adult doses of Miralax per day, Probiotic per day and plum juice and still not having consistent bowel movements. She is on a gluten and dairy free diet as well. Thanks.

We have struggled with this for many years and still do so with out 9 yo son. Its a bit easier and harder at the same time as you can imagine cause he is older. We spent a long weekend at home - flushing him - with 5-6 adult doses of miralax daily until he went and clear out - now he takes 1/2 dose of adult miralax daily along with fiber gummies daily and apple juice daily. its a constant struggle but i think we are just getting it under control.

Lilyluv we are on a program with magnesium for my daughter now, too. My doc told me in addition to helping with constipation it helps with sleep and anxiety! Sounds good to me!

My son has struggled with constipation issues since infancy. However, he loves blueberries and other fibrous fruit which has been a healthy remedy. If your child does not mind eating fruits that can help his GI system, it's healthy and keeps my little guy regular and happy.

Today our homeopath suggested supplementing with magnesium which is supposed to regulate bowel movements and help with sleep- wouldn't that be a dream?!
