Have you ever had to go to mediation or file a complaint against your child's school? Did you receive backlash from school staff after doing so?
Yes I did file a complaint. As a grandparent, I would often check on my grandchildren by visiting the school at a moments notice. Well one day I popped up and just happen to pass the administrative office. One of the clerks at the desk was having a conversation with an aide for the autistic children. It seems that the aide did not want to be responsible for changing the soiled diapers of the special needs children who could not go to the bathroom on their own. While she voiced her opinion, she also stated that "we were hired as room aides and why should we have to change them when they piss themselves?
As I always have, I went in and told her this "how dare you be this unprofessional and allow grandparents like me to hear you say what you will not do. We send our kids here hoping that there are sensitive people on staff who will treat them with respect and care and for you to say such a thing in front of other parents is an outrage....so this is what I am going to do for you....I am going downtown to Chicago Board of Education and report you to the person responsible for hiring a monster like you. Then if I find that they have not removed you when I return to the school, I will boycott your presence in any classroom where my grandchildren have to come in contact with you. Do not touch, feed, grab, clothe or speak to them in my presence.
Parents, I am glad to say that they removed her before the day was over. I did not see her again for a year and then as we well know with any public school, they sent her and her issues to another location, but at least she was not handling my grand children. Complaints do work when you work them.
I went to mediation. It improved my son's services considerably because the school district knew that I meant business. That doesn't mean that I was rude or anything. But they knew I was willing to do what it took to get my son good services. They treated me more seriously after that. Of course, each person and each school district is different.
@ALL-recently I posted about having to reprimand a high and mighty doctor at Larabida Children's hospital. As parents, we can't afford to allow the big and powerful, the high and mighty to intimidate us when it comes to the wellfare of our children. We already know they are going to have to go through a lot, so why not make it smoother if we can. Although the fat cats in the medical field and educational fields think they are beyond our reach, as parents and grandparents...we already know what type of power we have.
Thanks for your answers. We completed our 'mediation' for my daughter, just so that I could get them to do some educational testing for her to determine if she needs to be on an IEP vs. a 504, etc., bc I am not convinced that my child does not have some uncovered learning disability. They agreed to do the additional assessments we were requesting--now waiting to see the results. I just wonder why they wasted more of the state employees time by having them attend this mediation (there were 5 county school employees and one mediator, one school employee dosed off in the mediation--you could tell she really did NOT want to be there)...grrr...such a waste of three hours time for 8 people if they just would have agreed to do the assessments when we asked instead of making us jump through this hoop. If they would have, it would have been less $$ to begin with.
year before last, no they didn't backlash on my son because if they did I wore rip tem a even bigger hole in thier buts than we did before.Oh don't think if you do this they wont try to lie to yu more because they will. We done caught my sons school lying to us saying they are doing what we agreed upon and when in fact this makes the third thing I have busted them in as far as breaking our written agreement or not following our written agreement. You have to stay on them even after the mediation agreement is in play.
