IEP Meeting Coming Up, I Read A Few Places About Getting Extra Curicular Activities And Summer Camps Written Into IEP's, How Does This Work?

My son needs the socialization and the stimulation especially over school breaks or he becomes a safety risk but we simply cant afford to put him in the activities/camps with 3 kids on the spectrum and one income and ESY only lasts 4 weeks in this district so I am faced fearing spring break, 2 weeks at the end of June, and all of August. I keep reading about how the school can be held responsible for these activities becaue of this part of the IDEA

Not sure about adding summer camps but I do know that they can not legally limit ESY to 4 weeks. If a child is eligible for ESY it is up to the team to decide the duration of those services. For example I have a student who shows regression even over the weekends so his ESY services start The first Monday of summer break and go through the last Friday of summer break. This is 11 weeks of ESY. I also offered ESY over Spring Break but his parents declined. In the past I have worked with ESY students at the local Y. The child needed continued behavior support around peers and the school system didn't offer any programs so since both the parents and myself were members of the Y, I accompanied the child to Y programs so she could be with peers. It was a win win situation since the school system didn't have to pay for a special camp and only had to pay my hourly wage/travel expense.

You have to prove a need, whether it's from grades or get a doctor's note. Then you must call a meeting to address the issue separately from the regular IEP meeting. If the school is fighting against it, go to the board of education. If you need more assistance, find a local TEACHH who will send an advocate to the meeting for you and your child.

You need to proove regression in the summer or need for continued care. IE at the end of last year he was using the potty usually but refusing t enter the bathroom at the befining of the year. Or he could demonstrate counting skills last year but this year looks at you like your nuts when you count his ten fingers.
