My 5 year old was recently diagnose by a Psychologist and on the many suggesttions that may help my son with attention, concentration and sit for long periods of time was the Learning Rx ( brain training), I talk to the people over there and it looks like is a good option but is really expensive ( about 14,000) for a 8 month treatment, so before I get a loan to pay for that I would like to hear some experiences from other moms.
Thank u

Oh boy. I would do some serious googling before spending that kind of money.

The first few things I came up with on a search look really sketchy

I would not put my child's precious therapy time in the hands of these people and would not put my family's precious dollars in their wallets.

I would do a short-trial before committing to anything (regardless of therapy). I believe any therapy done intensively can be effective but also need a child who is ready for it. We tried DIR Floortime when our son was much younger and it was a disaster, but now he is great with it. Don't know much about learningRX other than there are lots of brain programs out there with marketing claims and no studies, so be careful given the high costs (curious, how much does it work out to $ per hour).

You might want to try HearBuilders first to see how he does with that: http://www.hearbuilder.com/auditoryMemory/

To be fair, there are no "double blind" peer reviewed studies on ABA either (cannot make it double blind) and the efficacy of ABA is something like 40%. Fortunately, VB/ABA does work for us but it isn't the only thing that works. We also do preschool, OT/ST, Floortime and private tutor.

I think the main problem with Learning RX (and why parents have complained) is the upfront large $ commitment vs promised results. If they had a pay as you go / cancel with monthly notice approach but no guarantees that would be much better and more in line with market and what other service providers do. From a cost/hr perspective, LearningRX works out to $75/hr compared to ABA which for us is around $50/hr, and ST/OT is usually $100+/hr. Floortime can be done for free to $50/hr.

I would not spend that kind of moey on any therapy method that isn't supported by a double-blind peer-reviewed scientific study. I have not tried Learning Rx, and don't know that much about it. Even though the theory might be sound, remember that there are a lot of good approaches out there, and money that you spend on one might not be available for others.

For $14K, you can get some very good ABA, or a year at a very good school (if you shop around). We know that school works, and we know that ABA works, so I would be concerned about spending money on anything else until I had at least tried school and ABA.

Obviously, every child is different, and what works for one child might not work for another. But always weigh your options based on research, not fear.
