Members widely validated that feeling guilty after an autism diagnosis is completely normal, with many sharing their own experiences of questioning pregnancy choices, missed early signs, or family genetics, even while knowing logically they did nothing wrong. Several members offered perspective shifts that helped them move forward, including focusing on their child's unique strengths rather than comparisons to peers, pursuing early intervention and therapies without dwelling on the past, and recognizing that autism is part of who their child is rather than something that needs fixing. A recurring theme was that guilt often fades as parents channel their energy into advocacy, celebrate small victories, connect with supportive communities, and learn to love and accept their child exactly as they are.

I would say absolutely yes. I still feel guilty. It doesn't mean I AM guilty of anything, though. It is a normal response. We try to find answers and control In situations where there are no answers and we have no control.

The guilt always continues, well past the diagnosis. Why didn't we push for more speech therapy, why don't we take them to more public places and just endure the meltdowns. We should have gotten rid of therapist A early, and pushed them to eat more fruits when they were really young.....

.... welcome to Autism... where you can be the best parents in the world, and do everything that is in your power for you kids, but still feel guilty that they are not like little Jimmy down the street.

We used to feel guilty but do not anymore because we came to the realization it is not our fault and spending time wording about it does no good and does not help anything.

You will find that your time is better spent getting the services you need and dealing with the now, than dealing with the past and things that were not in your control.

Yes. I think it's something we all go through. There wasn't anything you did wrong. There is a strong genetic component to autism and you can't help your genes. And if there is an environmental component, you didn't expose your child to anything on purpose so there wasn't anything you could have differently. Silly platitudes aren't going to help right now but I can tell you it gets better.
