As a Nanny, I am expected to care for the children (two, one on the spectrum), clean the common areas of the house, the children's areas, do their laundry and cook for them, as well as do PT and OT with them. That much I agree with. I am also expected to clean the adult's bathrooms (including scrubbing showers), do the adult's laundry, and pick-up after the adults. I find this to be a bit much, considering I receive just $7.50 an hour. Maybe I should just be glad the I have a job that I can do… read more

Members overwhelmingly agreed that a nanny earning $7.50 per hour while caring for two children (one with autism), performing therapy activities, and doing extensive housework including adult laundry and bathroom cleaning is being severely underpaid and taken advantage of. Several members shared that standard nanny rates range from $10 to $15 per hour for childcare alone, with special needs care commanding premium wages, and many emphasized that the described workload would be excessive even at double or triple the pay. A recurring theme was the importance of setting clear boundaries between nanny and housekeeper roles, advocating for fair compensation or reduced responsibilities, and recognizing that while the poster cares deeply about the children, the family is exploiting that dedication rather than valuing the skilled care being provided.

We paid our nanny $15/hr and she did half of the stuff that you have described which we thought was fair. She was great. As an additional data point, $7.50/hr is something that we would pay a teen baby sitter to look after kids for a few hours.

I had a nanny to take care of my baby at the time 7 month for for 6 hrs and pick up my son from the bus and watch him for 2 hrs thats it no cleaninb lr cooking just heat the food for mu kids thay i left them and I was paying her 300 a week she left because she said that was not enough my son is 5 and he's none verbal but has mild autism all she had to do was give him a snak and watch him after she left I had to leave my job and stay home because every other person I try to get would charge me 300 just for my baby and 15 an hr for my son because he's special needs so you need to leave and get a new job because they are paying you to little for all the work you do

$7.50 an hour would be on the low end even your sole responsibility was just taking care of the children (particularly since one has special needs). The fact that you are asked to do ANYTHING else for that amount of money I find outrageous.

Sounds like these people would rather have you deal with everything even their children so they can go out and live a normal life, which is not the case for all of us here.

I would say something or just quit if I were you. Think of how much you would have to pay for someone to come in and do OT, or PT, it is not cheap. If you work for an agency I would tell them as well along with all the other nanny's so they won't work for them either. They are literally treating you like an indentured servant

You could find a job at Walmart for more money than that. I know you are most likely thinking about the children here and you care about them but this is unfair and unacceptable anyway you look at it. I know it is expensive to care for two ASD children because that is what I have but if they can afford to have you there in the first place they are not doing to bad monetarily. Sorry to be negative but this is inexceptable.

That's just unreasonable. As a housewife I don't get all that with a child wit autism. You are caring for their most precious assets, their children and what they pay is insulting. Ok if they can't afford more than at least don't expect you to do laundry and bathtubs.
