I am thinking of having my son re-evaluated as he has come so far since his diagnosis a year and a half ago. My insurance will only cover an evaluation by a psychologist. The first time he was evaluated by a Developmental Pediatrician whom we paid out of pocket. My question is what the difference would be as far as assessment. Should I just go ahead and pay the money to have a DP re-evaluate him it is just so expensive. The average cost here in LA is $3,000.
I just want to make sure we are doing all we can. He has changed so much since his initial evaluation. I guess I also want affirmation that we are on the right track. I am also hoping he no longer meets the criteria for a diagnosis. That would be best case scenario.
No one to make recommendations on what my son would benefit from. He has changed so much since the initial evaluation.
I don't know. But if I pay out of pocket and not go through insurance no one but me, my husband and the evaluator would know if he looses the diagnosis. I love the progress he is making in social skills so don't want to lose that. I mainly just want to see if there are other therapies he might benefit from.
My son already has a diagnosis of autism. We have done a lot of therapy over the last year and a half to the point that I no longer think he would qualify for the diagnosis. Also he has excelled at his therapies and have been told by the therapists that he no longer needs that particular service. I guess what I want to find out if if there is anything else out there that he can benefit from therapy wise and/or does he even qualify as autistic.
Thanks MyZett. I think what I have found most confusing during this whole journey is that no one has really guided us. Most of my son's issues were social. He also had no imaginative play until about a year ago. We hired a behavioral interventionist to go to preschool with him twice a week to help him learn social interaction and how to play with other kids. In August he informed us my son no longer needed his services but to keep him in a social skills group. He is also receiving pragmatic speech therapy. We also do an hour and a half of ABA a week. They work on whatever areas they feel he needs work on. Like story telling with beginning, middle and end. He has a hard try relaying a story.
He has never needed OT or anything like that. Is there anything else out there he could benefit from. That is what I wonder.
