I have read all the research on this and the on-going oxytocin trials. Our doc suggested that we try it last year and we said no since we thought our son was social enough and too young. Although he is much better now at reading emotions and can often guess why someone may be feeling that (lots of teaching), there is something missing. True empathy, not just cognitive empathy. Not sure whether that can be taught. A lot more interested now in trying oxytocin for that reason. Anyone tried it… read more
We have a clinical trial around our area as well but for older kids. We are likely going to get the RX from our biomed doc as well. Aside from social processing, oxytocin does reduce cortisol levels (less anxiety) and lowers blood pressure (which is another area of research in ASD), so even from that perspective, it can be useful. All kids are different, so you don't really know who are good vs no responders, but for higher functioning/Aspie kids, it appears oxytocin seems to help a bit more based on studies. Ultimately, need to try to find out if worth it or not.
I keep tabs on the studies that are happening at the research hospitals in my area. Stanford is doing one on Oxytocin but my DD is too young for that particular study so I just got it from our biomed dr.
@A MyAutismTeam Member - are you seeing any positive (or negative) changes with respect to emotional reciprocity or social? I had read the studies and very comfortable with the short-term safety profile (long-time effect has not been studied, but we would likely just do a short-term trial to see whether any efficacy for us or not). This is via our DAN doctor, not a clinical trial. There are many clinical trials for oxytocin on-going.
How is everyone finding out about these trials? Pediatrician? Psychologist? Psychiatrist? ??? I feel like I'm driving my son's medical path instead of a Dr.
