This year our school decided to have most of First Grade homework online (Raz-kids, SpellingCity, Ixl.com) I'm finding it difficult to do 3 days of ABA home program at 2 hrs per day after school and do 30-45 min of homework on the computer. (Plus be a kid and play, watch a cartoon, etc.) I would much rather have a list of spelling words and quiz him various times a day, etc. like my NT 8 year old had at that age (and still does). Both my kids did not have over 20mn, and the spelling list was shortened, at the IEP I asked that list be shorter, and we increase reading skills, so that my child could master the few words. It was becoming so discourageing for them having list's that were all wrong so the shorter list helped A_LOT" If you know that it is stressing you out, it is likely it is stressing the child out. I believe that many School settings feed information fast and many can obtain that but there also is a large pocket of kids that Do not< so sometimes you need to change the pieces in the game.due to the fact it just does not fit our childrens learning styles or comprehension or pace.
That's too much for 1st grade. They should only have 10-15 minutes + reading for 20 minutes or so. My 1st grader is required to practice math facts for 10-15 minutes and read for 20 minutes. She does flash cards and math activity books at day care and we read at bedtime.
My first grade daughter only has about 15 minutes a day homework.... maybe you could incorporate the homework into the ABA somehow. Especially since the homework is only going to get harder. My ASD child is in 3rd grade and we have some focus issues and writing is a nightmare.
Wow. And my 7th grader is complaining. Ever hear of 10 min per grade? I can't remember where I heard that. Many schools tack on 15-20 min of reading too (Raz-kids).
