Is anyone out there living in either place? I am think in terms of pre-k programs and then grade school. Do services exist? How about in Jacksonville?
We currently live in an excellent area for services...
Thanks!
Ugh!
If you are in MA you are in one of the best states for ASD and if you are looking at FL you are going to be looking at one of the worst.
I lived in Florida for four years and can tell you other the Dan Marino center in Miami and children's Hospital in St Pete the medical care for ASD children is horrible, and the Dr's themselves will tell you stay up North.
When it comes to services the state offered almost nothing, so unless you have insurance that will pay for them you are out of luck. If you can afford to pay on your own Eden in Naples and Ft Myers are good but we had to pay $4k a year for our children to go to programs there even with the McKay grant.
When it comes to the schools they say they have specialized ASD classes and the do however the staff is not well trained and they consider general special Ed training good enough and it is not trust me. There are some good teachers here or there but for the most part the school districts are not great.
