Hello, I have the same issue with my son not liking textures and being a super picky eater. Have you tried juicing? You can juice pretty much any fruit or vegetable including spinach, which is rich in iron. Also, Pur-Absorb Iron supplement is iron fortified water that you can mix with any juice and it has no flavor. You can get it at health food stores or online. Juicing is also great for getting other nutrients into them when they are super sensitive to textures and flavors. I hope this helps!
If he's not a fan of meat, there are other foods that are high in iron like:
-grits, it's more of a southern food but I find it at stores here in the northeast in with the oatmeal, I find it tastes like what you mix with it whether it's cheese and/or bacon and eggs or instead sugar or something sweet
-many cereals, check the side panel at the store to see how much but even the Cocoa Krispies & Cinnamon Toast Crunch we have here both have 25% of the recommended iron and the gluten free Chocolate Chex we have has 45% of the recommended iron!
-spinach and other leafy greens that can be blended and disguised in smoothies if kids aren't a fan of veggies
But if that's not working to boost iron levels through diet, I'd speak with the doctor more. There are other steps they can take to help with iron. Sometimes people have difficulty absorbing it through food.
Me and you both!! I am going through this right now with my three year old. He eats wood, door frames, cardboard, foam cushion- very little food. We tried crushing the flinstones with iron for a month- saw no improvement in his CBC. He is now on prescription iron tablets- I have the same problem- how to get them in him. His doctor insisted we crush the tablet and dissolve in orange juice. We dispense with a medicine dropped three times a day- It takes two of us to hold him down- It is very tramatic for all parties! I would love to add you as we seem to be experiencing some of the same challenges.
When my daughter was little I used to blend up veggies and meat and add flour and egg and bake in mini muffin tins. Or mix with egg and bread crumbs and fry them. Check out the sneaky chef http://www.thesneakychef.com/free_sneaky_chef_r...
I bought a juicer for this same reason. My son refuses to eat any veggies. You can add the juice to baked goods like cookies and muffin. If I am running low on veggies and fruits V8 makes a juice that includes fruits and veggies. Capri sun does as well, but you just have to be cautious about sugar. As for protein and other nutrients I give my son a gummy vitamin and pediasure everyday. Good Luck!
