I have four children 14 11 8 and 7. Maybe it would be helpful if there was a certain time of day (like for one hour per day after school) that they are just left completely alone. I think it's always helpful to manage expectations. If they can expect to have from x time until y time to do their own thing and then know that after such a time, family time, homework, etc is what's expected it might help them.
