so i am new to this site, here is a little information on my back ground. My Ex husband and I adopted a little girl when she was two yrs old. We didn't know the full extent of her situation. We were told she was already diagnosed with adhd. Since then, she has been diagnosed with adhd, add, minor ocd tendencies and developmentally delayed. they have not formally diagnosed her with austism, but her doctor has said she could be on the lower spectrum. I have done endless research and all points… read more
My 9 year old is intellectually disabled. She also has a diagnosed mood disorder and ADHD. Most of her issues are controllable but every day, at least once, she will fly off the handle and start screaming and crying for whatever reason only she knows. She has done this all her life. It used to be 5-6 times a day. Whenever she does this, I send her to her room until she is finished. When she was 3 and 4 years old, she would lay down on the floor kicking and screaming. It didn't matter where we were. Stores, friends houses, doctors' offices. I finally stopped taking her any where for about a year. We have worked with therapists and I have gone through the Love & Logic curriculum. The other kids just walk away when she is having a fit....I don't know if this helps at all but if you just need to unload, I will listen.
I'm in a similar situation- except he has no kids of his own... The behaviors are a lot for ME, who is always here, but for someone with no kids and never been around kids- I inderstand what your saying. Unfourtnatley, lots of screaming sometimes here also. Factor in my sensory issues, and my ADHD, and a 3 year old who seems like his mission is to make as much noise as he can in his waking hours, and we are a circus!!!
You are very welcome. It is difficult to say the least to parent one of these amazing children. I got blessed with 4. I so much appreciate being in touch with others who understand what my life is like even if only a little bit. If I can share any of what I have learned in the past 10+ years, it is worth it.
Thank you so much. This site has helped me see, I'm not the only person who understands or has gone thru similar things. And your message touched my heart. I have sat down with my daughter and tried to explain that I will not tolerate the bad behavior any longer... And well I put it into action tonight. I will say so far so good... I am also trying to add more positive reenforcement so we will see how this works. Btw, thank you! :)
Yes his kids are aware, and they have been really good with her. They are very patient and try to help and be good role models. but at the same time they are also kids. They try to play with her and do different things with her. however, she can be very demanding, has a mood swing without any type of warning. What i mean is everyone will be having fun and all of a sudden my daughter decides that she isnt happy and lets everyone know by throwing fits, being rude, or even talking ugly to the other kids. I try to discipline, but I have also been told to choose my battles. we dont want a little thing to escalate into bigger situations or meltdowns. My daughter and I have done yrs of therapy. I have learned a lot from the therapy sessions but at the same time I feel I could do more. Yes my daughter is my first priority.
