We took Landon to the dentist yesterday because I noticed some dark spots on a couple of his bottom teeth. He has only been to the dentist once before when he was 2 and then they just took a quick peek and said everything looked fine. He still doesn't talk so there is no making him understand whats going on and he fights and kicks when we try to give him a haircut much less to let a dentist look in his mouth. They told us yesterday that he would have to go in the hospital under anesthesia to… read more

Andrew's Mom sits in the chair and holds her arms around him. He seems to accept it well. It took some time to get him used to the dentist.

Yeah sadly, when all the new regulations due to Obamacare kicked in at the beginning of this year most insurance companies stopped covering it. Generally Medicaid will cover anything since it is government provided but we don't qualify for it and the insurance we have through work is good generally but they won't cover this due to t being dental related and of course the dental insurance doesn't cover it either. I did find a dentist that is 2 hours away from us yesterday that does in office sedations and specializes with special needs kids. I went over our issues with them and they said they will attempt to sedate him in the office and if needed we just may have to make a few trips to get it all done. Most of what they use in office wears off quicker the older and bigger the kids are but if they can get him sedated then get the gas mask on him they think they can work with us. They said since our insurance did not cover the hospital trip they would try to do anything they can to help us. Hopefully it all works out. I am so glad I found them.

Other than practice at it, there is not much you can do. My daughters school has a practice chair and the staff wear scrubs so the children get used to going.

Unfortunately there is no other way other than that, or none I have heard of. A little surprised insurance will not pay though. They should if you have an RX with the reason our Medicaid will pay for it with our daughter.
