Weighted Blankets
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I am wondering if anyone has used weighted blankets to help their child sleep? My child sleeps TERRIBLE! Nothing helps him sleep.
Please let me know if weighted blankets work!

My 14 year old son sleeps on the floor and loves it. There is a bed in his room but it's more for my piece of mind. HE GOES to bed with a flashlight and his books on the floor. He sleeps all night and goes to bed at 8:30- 9:00. Sometimes I hear him with his books for 2 hours but he falls asleep and stays.

I was DEAD SET AGAINST GIVING MY SON ANY TYPE OF MEDICINE... But he would go sooo long without any sleep or would sleep for 2 hours and be up raring to go like he had 10 hours of sleep. I finally agreed to try something ... I cannot remember the name of that med but the smallest dose would zonk him within half hour and he would sleep for days if I let him.... So I said NO WAY... But after so many more months of the same insomnia I agreed to try Risperdal... He can only take liquid medicine and his dose is only 0.25ML (the size of a small raindrop) but he sleeps from 9-10pm - 7-8am very peacefully and it has turned his life around. There are strict Gov't guidelines and every 6 months he is tested for any possible detrimental effects it could cause. It's an option ... And I hope u understand I am not pushing drugs etc. etc... But just wanted u to know how it helped my little guy.

Have you tried melatonin? It really helped us.

We have a stuffed dog I took all the stuffing out and replaced with beans! His OT suggested it. We also do compressions (a kind of pushing down on his hips, back, joints ). Similar to weighted blanket. But we use melatonin as well. Is your son gluten free? Gluten effects sleep as well as sugar, dyes, preservatives etc. you will be amazed at the difference a diet makes on sleep. It took 10-12 weeks to see but worth it. Also we have soft music playing...it plays about an hour. For some this stimulates...but it calmed Jacob. Good luck!
