I can't believe I may be finally free of diapers after 5 years. My 5 year-old ASD, non-HFA daughter and non-ASD 3 year-old son are suddenly using the toilet after begging and reminding them to use the toilet. They wore underwear and panties but it didn't stop them from making a mess. @A MyAutismTeam Member, search under: potty training steps, potty training routine or potty training visual aids. Print them in color and post them in the bathroom. Show your kid what they need to do and have them do it again until they have it down.

Good job! I'm excited for you. My son was 7 before he was comfortable with the toilet and out of night time diapers.
Do you happen to have a sample of your visuals?
The visual aid was just something new and breaking it down into steps. It got both kids more interested in using the toilet. Now, we remind her to use the toilet before she goes somewhere (outside, school. . .) or she comes back, when she wakes up and before she goes to bed. It's stuff we all do as adults but they need to reminded to make it a routine.
Your daughter is only four and most kids get trained when they are 2 or 3. I really stressed out on wanting her to be potty trained by kindergarten but she did it. She's in a special ed class and I didn't want her have an added stigma if possible. I can't stop the autism but potty training is more doable by comparison. Believe me, when your daughter starts using the toilet independently your despondency will change to tears of joy. My daughter smeared poop on the walls and tossed it on the ceiling which really broke me down because I thought I hope this isn't the future for us. Passing the potty training hurdle gave me some real hope because it's hard to see real progress sometimes when teachers and therapists act positively and I'm not sure if they are just being nice.
So you found the visual schedule really helped? My daughter was mostly accident free for #1 and starting to go independently 6 months ago but is now going through regression after starting at a new school with a new therapy team (she's 4). Is making my husband and I despondent. I just wish I knew that it would happen eventually! Have to start potty training #2, my NT 2yo, soon!
