We were thinking about sending our son to a co-op preschool that's private. His IEP is in 2 weeks. Can I opt to accept their speech & OT services w/o accepting the education portion or are the services contingent on accepting the whole package??

I work in an IL public school and here if your child attends a private school then the public school is responsible for providing walk in services for Speech and Social Work. I don't think they are required to provide walk in OT services. You can call and ask the case manager for your options. I'd just advise you to visit the public school before you decide. Here, many of the public school special ed services are much better for students. Of course, special ed teams vary from school to school, but we've seen amazing growth in the students with Autism at my elementary school. Good luck!

I think it depends on your state as well but from what I know you have to allow them to provide services and if they cannot provide them because they cannot do it adequately then they are responsible to provide it outside of the school.

What you would be doing is asking them to provide a service outside the school which they may be able to provide therefore the most likely not do it.

The school still needs to provide any related services he is eligible for, they are however not required to provide transportation or have the therapist travel.

depends on your situation. IE insurance, income. I was told no. I live in Illinois. I think in some places like NY. This answer may be different. With my 1st son 15years ago I had BCBS and was able to have him in a private school and get services outside of school. With my younger one in public school he gets services in school and I was told no services would be provided if he attended private school we now have public aid. You might ask your local special education office or extension office (the place that puts together the IEP for you).
