Where Can I Get The Cheapest Chromosome Test?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

it costs about 6k to get genetic testing for my child. I know the DNA parts of it and fragile x (neg).. Where can I get chromosome analysis done for super super cheap?

what i did was that i went to my OGBYN and explained to them that my first son was autistic and that i wanted to have the fragile-x blood test done because i wanted to still have more children but before getting pregnant again I wanted to know if i was carrier because that would determine if i was going to go through with it or not. So they gave me prescription and submit it through the insurance. My results came negative, but autism is not just generic driven, so it doesnt mean that theres is still not a chance it may not happen again, but at least know that the chances are not even greater.

it's odd bc my husband has been offered chromosome testing and it search for micro deletions on every strand and is only $800.. but of course my kid's is 5 times as much and not sure if it does the micro and her insurance won't pay for it because it "doesn't matter"

We did the chromosomal microarray test since it was covered by the insurance and all it did was tell us that our daughter is normal 46XX. We looked into doing the whole exome test but that was something like $10k at the time and there was no guarantee that anybody would be able to interpret the findings. Plenty of people find mutations when they sequence the whole shebang but unless doctors actually know the clinical significance of that mutation, it's a case of "huh, that's weird".

Um ok.. so does anyone know which labs and costs from micro array chromosome testing?
23andme does complete DNA anaylsis for $99 and you can check ANY dna marker.
counsyl will do some further genetic testing and they say $99 if you have proof of insurance (otherwise about $399) and they test for fragile x.

I did 23andme and ALL of us.. nothing too exciting. and counsyl showed I don't carry fragile x which means my kids will never have it (though if dad has they could be carriers) and that has given me a lot of stress off my back

I am dying to know about chromosomes.. I just tested my one embryo and it had 2 extra chromosomes.. one known for intellectual disabilities but the other wasn't known to be compatible with life and it was removed. (they wouldn't implant an egg like that)

So I'm very excited to get this done

Would prefer positive posts than who cares

You can't get the testing done cheaply from my knowledge. We did all the testing that cost thousands and it gave us no answers. We did it because we did not know any better, now when I have been asked I advise against it because there is nothing to be gained.
