Members rallied around a parent struggling with their 6-year-old son's frequent bowel accidents at home, with several sharing that their own children experienced similar challenges and eventually overcame them with patience and the right interventions. Many community members described gritty or loose stools as a potential sign of gluten intolerance, recommending a gluten-free diet alongside daily probiotics like Floragen, which multiple families credited with helping their children achieve consistent toilet training within days to weeks. A recurring theme was the importance of positive reinforcement without pressure, ruling out food sensitivities through elimination diets, and trusting that progress will come even if it takes years.

Yep, my daughter had the pale gritty poop and would have tiny little accidents throughout the day. After taking gluten out of her diet she started pooping in the potty within days of removing it from her diet.

Is he gluten-free? If he's having runny, gritty bowel movements that will help.

We give our son a Floragen probiotic every morning. we break the capsule in his almond milk. He is also on the gf cf diet without too much fruit and juice. You can also add benefiber to improve the loose stools. when we added the probiotic over a couple of years ago our son became completely toilet trained. Accidents came only when stools occasionally became loose. He eventually learned to avoid accidents even with loose stools.

@A MyAutismTeam Member, my boy wore diapers until he was 9, he too had an issue with BM's. He eventually learned that same year and has been fine ever since. I wouldn't worry, your boy will go when he's ready, but definitely encourage him positively. Good luck.
