I did not breastfeed my daughter...now I have alot of guilt that this may be a reason she is mildly autistic. ..im 8 mo pregnant and definitely going to try with my son...think there is a correlation?
Don't ever beat yourself up over it. I will tell you... I did not breastfeed my first child (who is now 15 and it neurotypical, and has zero known allergies) he is the most healthy kid I've ever met. Has only been sick possibly a handful of times and has probably missed 3 days total of school his entire school career for being sick. I was also told by his paternal grandmother that I needed to stop giving him formula when he was about 9 months old and put him on milk. I was young, naive and believed what she told me to be truth.
Then, fast forward 9 years later, my second son who is now 6, I breastfed him as long as I had a milk supply (medical mystery!!! it just stopped after about 8 months). He is sick all the time. Allergic to so much stuff and is autistic.
Breastfeeding or not, it does not matter - it's not YOUR fault. Don't feel bad.
But, I still support your motivation to breastfeed your second child. It's easier, bonding is better, and it's so much cheaper, plus there is health benefits for both you and baby. But, if you end up not breastfeeding him, please remember... 1. It's OKAY! and 2. It will NOT cause autism. Good luck. :)
I breastfed my son on demand until almost 2....even breast feeding him through the night and he was diagnosed with autism.
Please don't blame yourself.
I do, however, HIGHLY recommend breastfeeding...there are so many benefits to both mom and baby!
I'm still breastfeeding my 17 month old son day and night. He shows absolutely no signs of stopping any time soon, some days breastmilk is all he will eat/drink. Yet so far, he's got a whole bunch of ASD markers - he's non-verbal, he can't swallow textured/solid foods, he has gross motor delays, he has a lot of sensory processing issues, he struggles terribly with falling and staying asleep, and he rarely makes eye contact with people. Where we live, the official diagnosis process starts when he turns 2, but the paediatrician has already started discussing his autistic tendencies with us. I love breastfeeding him, it's a beautiful experience that I share with my son, but it doesn't seem to have made much of difference for us as far as autism is concerned...
I bottle fed my eldest - he has moderate autism.
I breastfed my middle child for 3 months - he has severe autism ( non verbal) and learning difficulties.
I am still breastfeeding my 26 month old daughter - she is looking like she has severe autism and learning difficulties.
Breastfeeding is great for many things, but I don't think it will make a difference autism wise. Xxx
I breast fed my 14 yr old and he has hfa, I didn't breast feed my older 2...I don't think there's a connection. But I do believe breast feeding your baby for as long as possible will k keep him/her healthier. Nowadays, you gotta be careful with everything you feed your child. .so many pesticides in our food. Do what you feel most comfortable with.
