The state does not offer much in regards to services and when we were there the teachers were not the best in regards to dealing with autism in the public schools. We took the children to Eden in the summer but it was mostly out of pocket. There is the McKay scholarship but it will not pay for everything.

The public schools are big on integration so if your child needs more help it is not going to be easy. We left Florida for these reasons.

Please look into DeLaSalle Academy!! They are wonderful! Fort Myers. It's expensive but there are scholarships that cover most of it!!

Hello! I am considering a move back down to the FM/Naples area. Like you, Aubrey and Bek, I have a high functioning kiddo. He is currently mainstreamed, but isn't given proper (any) supports in his gen ed class. He's basically sent there with nothing. He's a fifth grader and our options for middle school are all or nothing. As in, he can either receive supports in a self-contained class with kids experiencing severe disabilities and behaviors or gen ed/resource that only provides academic support. He also has dyslexia, dysgraphia and math challenges. I grew up in Cape Coral, where my family has just moved back to. I loathe everything about the place, personally. But, my mom is there and needs more help. I would consider Fort Myers or Naples. The winner being whichever place could provide the best supportive and inclusive environment for my boy. I would love to hear how your experiences have been thus far and which schools you finally settled on. Thanks!

He is 12 and just wrapping up 6th grade. It was a big move, but my mom had space for us when needed it, so we packed up the apartment and moved down here. i still can't believe we have been here for 10 years. Time flies! Let me know when you are settled in, so we can get our boys together.
