I wouldn't rely on medication alone, my son is also delayed and he was supposed to be going to 6th grade this year and did for about two weeks until I realized with him being as behind as he is was going to make his experience extremely difficult. He's already on medication that's not the problem so I decided to take him out of school and homeschool which was never in my plans to do, but I realized how much one on one he really needs, he's doing amazing now and catching up fast. I know that not everyone has the opportunity to do homeschool but you can work with your child one on one to help him after school and work. It would be impossible for the school to give him the one on one he needs for as long as he needs it. Most of the newer meds that help focus are of the milder variety when it comes to side effects from what I have experienced or seen. Pro athletes take some of these meds for focus. I am not taking performance enhancers but the meds for focus.

The meds that have the highest side effects are antipsychotics but that is not what you would need for focus. I have used adderal for my son for years and it has never been a problem. We have only had to raise the dosage once and not by much. I can tell you it has helped my son tremendously.

With that being said you need to work with the doctor in choosing the best med and also choosing the right dosage. Sometimes it is trial and error. I don't know much about biomed so I can't help there.

My daughter is autistic and 9 yrs old. She, too, has focus problems and is at about a 2nd grade level even though she is in the 4th grade. I give her EHT, a product, which helps her focus much better. I just wish I had it yrs ago. And, to share a bit with you... I totally agree that it may very well be that his lower scoring at school is related to his inability to stay focused and on task. My son is extremely above average in reading, for example, but in spelling he is below level. However, he (first off) doesn't enjoy spending time learning to spell, and second it's hard for him to stay on task or focused with spelling as it bores him and he loses interest in things very quickly. However, after finally getting him to sit down and LISTEN long enough and TRY long enough, he was able to memorize all of his spelling words in 15 minutes... and where he'd get nearly 0 of them correct in the past, in one day he memorized the spelling for all the words and the following day on his spelling test got a 100% with absolutely no long term studying... we did it the night before (and he previously was unable to spell correctly a single word before we started!)
